What I Like About Insurance Salesman – Charleston
RiverDogs
|
|
Wednesday, May 31, 2006
Charleston will help insurance salesman
by offering a continuing education class
before the game. Then, the RiverDogs will
make fun insurance salesmen by dressing
in hats and trench coats and selling bogus
insurance policies. Staff members will walk
the stands offing such things as “bunt insurance”
for five dollars. If a player bunts, the
holder can redeem the policy for $10 worth
of hot dogs and sodas.

NASCAR Night – Southwest Michigan Devil Rays
|
|
Tuesday, May 30, 2006
We here at MinorLeagueDugout.com love a
good race. Southwest Michigan is bringing
in actual race cars and simulators, and
will give away tickets to races at near-by
Michigan International Speedway. Think the
players’ uniforms will sport Tide, Bud and
Office Depot logos?

Tribute to the Hot Dog – Reading Phillies
|
|
Monday, May 29, 2006
On Memorial Day, Reading will pay homage
to the ultimate baseball food: the hot dog.
The Phillies will give away a coupon for
a free hot dog to all fans in attendance.
They are also bringing in a 75 foot long
hot dog. It’s so big, the bun will be assembled
in eight foot sections, prompting Reading
director of media relations Rob Hackash
to surmise that they probably couldn’t find
a 75-foot long bread oven.

You’re Outta Here Night – Palm Beach Cardinals
|
|
Tuesday, May 16, 2006
Palm Beach celebrates cantankerous former
New York Yankees manager Billy Martin’s birthday
with a night that honors great baseball ejections.
If either team’s manager is ejected, all fans
receive a free ticket to an upcoming game.
That should be enough incentive for one of
the skippers to toss a cap and kick some dirt.

New Year’s Celebration – St. Paul Saints
|
|
Monday, May 15, 2006
Happy New Year! OK, so the Ides of May
isn’t traditionally considered the start
of any year, but this is St. Paul - a team
whose ownership group includes promoter
extraordinaire Mike Veeck. It’s not that
much of a stretch. The Saints open the independent
American Association’s inaugural season
today. We bet the Saints know how to throw
a New Year’s ball.

Sea Dogs Mother’s Day Road Race – Portland
Sea Dogs
|
|
Sunday, May 14, 2006
Portland has found a way to get fans to
stay in their seats. They hope to make them
too tired to leave. For the sixth consecutive
year, the Portland Sea Dogs host a 5K race
on Mother’s Day. Entrants in the race don’t
have to be mothers. That’s a shame. The
mother-running-while-pushing-a-stroller
division is something they should consider
adding for next year.

|
| Thursday,
May 11, 2006
Hey there knights, grab your wenches and
head to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a trip
back in time. The Somerset Patriots are
bringing in actors from a local renaissance
fair to entertain the crowd. There will
be a mock battle complete with sword fighting
on the field before the game, along with
pre-game singing and dancing. Fans dressed
in costumes from the middle ages receive
reduced ticket prices. We here at MinorLeagueDugout.com
think admission should be based on the middle-age
custom of barter. Admission and four hot
dogs for a family of four: one rabbit.
Thirsty Thursdays: Charlotte, Columbus
(Ga.), Delmarva, Hagerstown, Jacksonville,
Kannapolis, Modesto, Myrtle Beach, New Orleans,
Southwest Michigan, Stockton and Tucson.

Bisons
Special Announcement Night – Buffalo Bisons
|
| Sunday,
May 7, 2006
The Buffalo Bisons are doing a pretty good
job of keeping this promotion under wraps.
All the Buffalo front office would say is
that they are adding a member to the Bisons’
family. So let’s speculate. A live Bison?
A stuffed Bison head? A new mascot that looks
like a snow shovel? A plane to shuttle patrons
to Florida in the winter? MinorLeagueDugout
is on pins and needles.

Cinco
de Estrada – Altoona Curve
|
| Friday,
May 5, 2006
Many clubs are holding Cinco de Mayo celebrations,
but only the Altoona Curve are bringing in
Erik Estrada. So the former “CHiPS” star was
actually born in New York. He did act in a
Mexican soap opera in the early 90s. Estrada
will throw out the opening pitch, sing Take
Me Out To The Ballgame and sign autographs.
Concession stands will sell Mexican Food,
piñatas will hang in the stadium and the Altoona
Curve staff will wear sombreros.

Binghamton, Birmingham, Bowie, Bridgeport,

Springs, Connecticut, Delmarva, Durham, Frederick,

National Day Of Prayer – Clearwater Threshers
|
| Thursday,
May 4, 2006
The Clearwater Threshers will take part in
National Prayer Day by holding a prayer service
following their Florida State League game.
Usually religious events don’t scream “outrageous
fun.” But you have to hand it to the folks
in Clearwater for not allowing the expected
100 church groups to interfere with their
Thirsty Thursday promotion. Two-for-one cocktails
is probably the answer to someone’s prayer.
Other Thirsty Thursday participants: Brevard
County, Carolina, Charleston, Charlotte, Daytona,
Delmarva, Fort Myers, Fresno, Greensboro,
Midland, Nashville, Savannah and West Tennessee.
