Albuquerque man wins second new car
By Chuck King

Walk-off home runs are nice. Drive off home runs – well, that’s where the fun starts.

For the second time in less than year, an Albuquerque Isotopes fan won the best minor league promotion the Isotopes offer.

Twice in the last nine months, Larry Trujillo’s has been chosen the Sandia Resort and Casino Grand Slam contest. When an Isotope belted a grand slam both times, Trujillo, a casual minor league baseball fan, won two new cars.

Larry Trujillo attends about 20 Albuquerque games each year. To get to the Isotopes’ May 5 Pacific Coast League game, Trujillo drove the Nissan XTerra he won in August.

Upon entering the stadium on May 5, Trujillo dropped his name into the raffle box again. That his name was once again chosen was improbable enough. Then, Trujillo watched in awe when Paul Hoover smashed a grand slam over the right field wall.

“I think he was just as surprised as everyone else,” Albuquerque director of media relations Steve Hurlbert said. “He was stunned. He just couldn’t believe it. He was almost in shock.”

Trujillo won another SUV – this time a Ford Escape. A rainstorm following the game kept the Isotopes from formally presenting Trujillo with his second new car. Albuquerque is expecting to present Trujillo with his second new car during this week’s homestand.

He’s also become a minor celebrity. Trujillo has been interviewed on ESPN radio’s Dan Patrick Show, and by numerous local television and radio stations interested in the man who won two new cars.

This is the third car given away by the Isotopes since the promotion started in 2003. Hulbert said Trujillo is more than welcome to try for a third car.

Now that Trujillo has won two new cars, he plans to spend more time at Isotopes Park.

“Now I’ve got another car,” Trujillo told the Isotopes’ Web site. “I’m the No. 1 fan out here right now.”
